The Information Gap™

When someone can't speak, what do you know?

In an emergency, the people trying to help may not know the person's name, medical information, or who should be contacted. The Information Gap™ is the space between the information that exists and the information that is actually available when someone cannot communicate.

The information may exist.
Access is the problem.

A phone may be locked. Friends or coworkers may not know the details. A person may be unconscious, disoriented, or otherwise unable to answer questions.

Help Responds
Appropriate local emergency procedures take over, while available information can help those assisting understand who the person is and who should be contacted.
What Is The Information Gap™?

A gap that can happen to anyone.

The Information Gap™ can appear whenever a person cannot provide information for themselves. It may happen after an injury, during a medical event, or when someone is disoriented or otherwise unable to communicate.

The problem is not necessarily that the information doesn't exist. It may simply be inaccessible to the people trying to help.

Scan If Hurt™ is designed to help bridge that gap by connecting a scannable Safety ID™ to emergency information and contacts the user chooses to make available.

Where The Gap Appears

Different situations.
The same missing answers.

Onboard

A crew member cannot communicate.

The people assisting may know the person professionally but may not know their emergency contacts or the information they chose to make available for an emergency.

Who should we contact? Is there information they wanted helpers to know?
Dockside & Ashore

The vessel isn't right beside them.

Crew, owners, and guests move between marinas, vehicles, airports, hotels, restaurants, and unfamiliar destinations. The people nearby may know nothing about them.

Who are they? Who should be called? What information is available?
International Travel

They are far from their usual network.

Maritime life crosses ports, countries, and jurisdictions. A person's usual contacts, vessel team, or familiar support network may not be immediately present.

How can the person helping access the information and contacts the traveler chose to share?
The Maritime Information Gap

A mobile community creates a different challenge.

Maritime professionals and guests do not stay in one environment. They move between vessels, docks, ports, countries, transportation, accommodations, and life ashore.

A vessel may have records onboard, but an emergency does not always happen onboard. The Information Gap™ can follow a person beyond the place where their information is normally kept.

Captains & Crew

Emergency information can remain connected to the individual as they move between vessel operations and life ashore.

Owners & Guests

A Safety ID™ can connect helpers to the information and contacts the profile owner has chosen to make available.

Fleets & Management

A consistent safety concept can support people who work across vessels, destinations, and changing schedules.

Marinas & Organizations

The Information Gap™ provides a simple framework for understanding why accessible emergency information matters beyond the vessel itself.

The Story Behind Scan If Hurt™

The questions nobody could answer.

On October 13, 2024, a group of friends were riding trails when one rider suffered a serious accident. He was unable to communicate, and the friends around him did not have answers to basic questions about his medical information or emergency contacts.

They knew his wife's name, but they did not have her phone number. The experience exposed how quickly important information can become inaccessible when the person involved cannot provide it.

That experience became the driving force behind Scan If Hurt™ and the idea now called The Information Gap™: make a person's chosen emergency information and contacts easier to access when they cannot speak for themselves.

Why Access Matters

Missing information creates more questions.

?

Identity & Context

People assisting may not know who the person is or what emergency information the person chose to make available.

☎

Emergency Contacts

Without accessible contact information, the people assisting may not know whom the person wants contacted.

↗

Continuity Across Locations

Information stored somewhere else may be difficult to reach when an incident happens away from the vessel, home, office, or usual support network.
